Welcome to the Kidmin1124.com Volunteer Champion of the Week. There are thousands and thousands of volunteers who turn out each weekend and selflessly serve children in churches around the globe. They do not do what they do for recognition or accolades, but at Kidmin1124 we would like to shine a light on some of these volunteers as a way to say “Thank You!” So, each week we recognize one volunteer from the world of kidmin who goes above and beyond in their service to God’s kids. Our hope is that this segment will provide some well deserved recognition to individual volunteers. More importantly though, we have asked these Volunteer Champions to share some of their insights and experiences with us so that we can all learn from their wisdom.
This week’s recipients, based on a nomination from our very own Jared Massey, is (drum roll please):

4. How long have you been involved in children’s ministry?
5. What position(s) do you volunteer at in your children’s ministry?
K-6 grade Sunday school teacher and BGMC coordinator
6. Tell us about your family (spouse, kids, etc.)
I am married to David Barnes and have three children. (Isaac 11, Carter 5, and Madeline 4)
We also asked Rachel to share some thoughts and wisdom on some selected questions. Here is what she had to say:
1. What is the single greatest lesson God has taught you through your volunteering in children’s ministry?
Jesus needs to be in everyone’s hearts! And for me, God really helped me realize volunteering for me isn’t about being willing to help fill a position at church, its about winning people to Christ!
2. What have you learned about leadership as a volunteer?
I’ve learned that being a leader has helped me get through some of my own personal insecurities! Children and people count on me to do my part, and in turn has helped me become a better person on the inside and out! Volunteering has allowed me to use the abilities God has given me to accomplish things I would of never thought I could do, and has changed my life!
3. How did volunteering so much affect your own children and family (good and bad)?
My volunteering at first was more difficult for my children because it would take some time away from them! But they have quickly adjusted, and I believe my whole family is very proud of me! My son is proud that I am his Sunday school teacher! And I feel that I have become a better mother/wife since I have started volunteering my time to help change other children’s lives.
4. As a volunteer yourself, what advice would you give to a new or young children’s pastor who needs help learning to recruit or retain volunteers?
Look for the people that have the love of Jesus in their hearts and show it! I know I love Jesus, and he is the only reason I volunteer. Sometimes it becomes a competition of worldly appearances or rankings, when people volunteer. For me, I know that all I care about is one judgment from God. I think it is sometimes hard to determine the sincerity of someone who wants to volunteer and it takes a good Pastor/Youth Pastor to make the decision of who will help benefit the kingdom of God the most!
