Reading and the Holy Spirit…What Guides You?

Theresa Haskins —  August 4, 2010

I love to read!  I love to read various genres (The Bible-of course-and mostly Christian non-fiction, children’s, pre-teen, and teen reads, but on occasion I treat myself to Christian fiction), and I love to read them all at the same time!  I have also noticed that I love to RESEARCH topics of interest to me, to obtain various opinions and points of view.  I like to understand the BIG picture.

It is also amazing to me how God is ALWAYS at work in our lives.  I believe He controls my thoughts and actions THROUGH the gift of the Holy Spirit, who resides in me.

You may be thinking, what does reading have to do with the gift of the Holy Spirit?  Well, let me explain:  I feel like God speaks to me through what I read, and I get excited thinking about how He directs me to WHAT I should read each day in an effort to show me what He wants me to learn that day (all through the power of the Holy Spirit).

This morning He really shook me up!  In a book written by Henry and Melvin Blackaby, entitled Experiencing the Spirit: The Power of Pentecost Every DayExperiencing the Spirit:  The Power of Pentecost Every Day, the authors made the following claim (I don’t have the book with me or I would quote them exactly):

Jesus was fully human, and was able to do His work (work assignments given to Him by His Father) through the power of the Holy Spirit – the same gift we have been given.

WOW!  The same Spirit, exactly. I had to ponder that thought for a bit…I think I have always thought of Jesus as human – but not really.  …completely human (like me)…using ONLY the power of the Holy Spirit?  I had just never thought about it that way….What do you think?  Have you always understood that?  What does it mean to you in your walk with Jesus to know that he walked and lived by the same power that you and I walk and live?

  1. Theresa we have the same love for the written word! I often feel led in what I am reading by the Holy Spirit. Like right now I am reading The Sacred Echo by Margaret Feinberg. This book has much to say on prayer and it is exactly what I needed to hear when I needed to hear it. I love that!

  2. I love to read also. I feel the Holy Spirit speak to my heart even when I am reading a Christian fiction novel. Some writers can paint such great pictures with their words that I am better able to understand a spiritual concept through their writing. It’s like the Holy Spirit says, “See that’s what I mean.” I am reading a great book on prayer right now. I am learning so much. My prayer life is changing dramatically.

  3. Tammy I am reading a book on prayer as well. I am reading The Sacred Echo by Margaret Feinberg. Which one are you reading?

  4. Tammy, I would love to know what you’re reading also.

Regarding fiction, I just finished Her Mother’s Hope by Francine Rivers. Oh my gosh, what a fabulous book! And you’re right Tammy, the mothering mistakes were so clear and convicting! I can’t wait to read the next one – Her Daughter’s Dream! It’s due out soon! (and I get to write a blog on it!)
