Let me start by saying that this article is different from what you are used to reading on this site. It is not children’s ministry related, but I hope you will read it anyway.
I set out today to right the second in my “I Can’t Dive” series, but this message was laid on my heart and I have to share it. Today as I stood in a local glass shop getting pricing for a new mirror for my car I heard on the news about a man in Nevada that walked into an IHOP and had killed several people. I was both saddened and outraged. I was saddened for those that lost their lives and for the gunmen that found himself in such a dire situation that he thought this was the best way to deal with it. I was outraged by the unjust loss of life. For me this event was a symptom of a much bigger problem, Our Nation Is Sick.
In 2 Chronicles 7:14 God promises, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” This promise was made to the Israelites after years of turning away from God. As I listened to this news story I couldn’t help but think that America has done the same thing. There can be little doubt that our founding fathers were Christians and that Christian values are a major part of the foundations of our country. However, in the years since the founding of our country we have gradually drifted further and further from God. We may not be worshipping Baal or any of the other false gods that the Israelites turned to, but we have come to worship things other than God. We slowly allowed many things distract us from God. This may be new cars, or bigger TVs. It may be happenings in Hollywood, or a profession athlete. It is something different for all of us, but for most of us there are things that, if we are honest distract us from loving God with all our Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength.
In this promise God starts by saying, “If my people, who are called by my name…” This means CHRISTIANS!!! Sometimes in the church we like to point at the people around us and blame them for the problems in our country. However, I think that this passage clearly points out that Christians are to blame. This verse does not say that if ALL the people will turn from their wicked ways and pray, it is HIS PEOPLE. If you profess to be a Christian, than this means you.
Well, in a couple days we will honor the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that shook our country to its very core. I think that this a perfect time for Christians to unite and do what God is calling us to do in 2 Chronicles 7:14. I challenge everyone that reads this to repost it to your blog, or write a similar article for your blog. Challenge every Christian that you know to pray this Sunday for God to heal our land. I know that this single article cannot reach every Christian in the US, but if those who read it will spread the word, then maybe we can see God do a mighty work as we all take time to remember those that died in this attack on our country 10 years ago.
Matt Norman, one of HIS people, called by HIS name and I will be praying.
